Picking a Microphone

So...what microphone do you really need?

The #1 question voice actors ask (other than which P2P to join) is what the best microphone is...and I am here to complicate this issue. Let go of the idea that you need to break the bank to sound good! The key to a great microphone choice is finding something that enhances your voice and makes you sound your best. There are industry standard microphones, like the TLM103 or the MKH 416, but that doesn't mean that it is the best microphone for you. Try some out, experiment, and do your research to learn which would fit your voice, studio situation, and budget.

"I find that many new voice actors dive head first into purchasing gear. I always say get your training first, then think about gear." - Tom

Our Mic Suggestions

My favorite microphone is the Sennheiser MKH 416. I have been using this mic for years, and recently wrote about my experience with the mic. Gillian's favorite microphone is the KMS 105, but suggests that you explore your options and don't limit yourself to what others are calling the standard VO mics. If you're looking for more options or ideas for upgrading your gear at several price points, check out Gillian's Gear Recommendation List.

Takeaways:

  • You don't need expensive gear to be a great voice actor & to have a great sounding set up.

  • Tom's go-to mic is the MKH 416 while Gillian's is the KMS 105

  • Don't be afraid to try a few microphones before buying

  • A microphone will not make or break your VO career

  • The most important part of recording is the performance behind the mic (but sounding clear is a huge plus)
