Here’s a lesson in fear. Don’t worry, I’ll get to it at the end…
Over the weekend I attended FaffCon 3 in Hershey, PA. This was one of the most amazing weekends of my life, and I’m not exaggerating. This “un-conference” was a collection of 104 voice talents coming together to share their collective wisdom in a very unique format. And share we did!
Friday was a field trip to Hershey World and a lovely dinner at the Fire House Restaurant in Harrisburg. Oh, and FaffJam! Many of the talents brought their musical instruments and put on quite a show!
Saturday was a full day of seminars. I attended six of them and topics ranged from marketing to reading copy to making the transition from “corporate drone” to full-time VO talent. All of them were very enlightening!
That evening included having a few brews at Molly Brannigan’s and watching dozens of VO talents singing their faces off for SEVEN hours straight at the Karaoke machine in the hotel lounge.
Sunday I attended four more seminars and I ran my own seminar about goal-setting and Action Plans. It was a hit! BTW I’ve gotten many requests for the templates I showed so please drop me a line if you want one.
So many more wonderful things happened that I can’t even begin to describe them! The new friendships, the nigh-infinite number of “Aha!” moments, and the fun. FaffCon was just plain fun.
TIP OF THE WEEK
I learned so much, so much. I learned where I stand in the voiceover community when it comes to talent, skill sets, work ethic and many other standards. These things are important know so you can determine how far you’ve come and how far you have to go.
I also picked up a countless amount of tidbits to improve my business, everything from websites to books to the legal-speak you should have on your invoice.
So, what was the most important thing I took away from the conference? I learned that the single biggest determining factor to becoming successful in life is fear. Fear of change, fear of failure, fear of being un-loved. Everybody is scared. Everyone has fear. But it’s what you DO with that fear that makes you who you are. Fear can be the single-most inspiring, motivating factor that can propel you forward. Or it can cover you with that heavy wet blanket and smother you. What’s it gonna be, folks: wet blanket, or freedom?
I want to thank everyone who made FaffCon such a delightful, affirming event for me. I made some new friends, strengthened & deepened my relationships with old friends, and spent quality time with some very special people. You know who are and I love you all!
