    Keeping Up with Voice Over Tech at Bild Expo 2025 In the voice over world, keeping up with technology is no easy thing. There are new microphones, audio interfaces, headphones, etc. that drop every day and with the exception of a precious few (paging George The Tech ) we in the voice over community have no idea which toy (ahem) tool to add to our signal chain. This is why I love attending the Bild Expo here in New York City. What is The Bild Expo? The Bild Expo is produced by B&H , a highly regarded photo/video store here in Manhattan. Bild’s two days and nights will be jam packed with inspiration, camaraderie, and a ton of fun. Many of us enjoyed the incredible excitement of the first Bild Expo in September 2023; we’re thrilled to bring to you Bild Expo 2025 which will be even bigger and even better.  And just like last time, Bild Expo is absolutely free to attend! I attended the first Bild Expo in 2023 ( you can read that blog entry here ) and I was thrilled it returned. And yes, there was a dude at the Adobe booth blowing bubbles. Don't ask me what that has to do with photography equipment, but it was pretty cool nonetheless. I am seriously considering adding it to my travel rig. The Lewitt Connect 6 Audio Interface I checked out the Sennheiser and Rode booths but I didn't see anything new that's worth sharing. I did go to the "Audio Experience" room where B&H had set up of maybe 50 mics. They were all hooked up so you could try any of them out. It's very similar to the setup they have at their store. If you haven't been there and tried it out, it's a ton of fun! Shure SM4 Headphones The Audio-Technica booth had all the classic headphones we've come to know & love but I really liked the pair below... Audio-Technica ATH-R70xa Headphones FYI this is an open-back headphone. That means you shouldn't use them in the booth since the sound may bleed into your recording.     Legacy Thinking: Your Voice Over Career's Silent Saboteur We need to talk. This discussion isn't about voice-over business tips and tricks. It's about something far more insidious. This hidden force can quietly and brutally stunt your voice acting career: Legacy Thinking. What is Legacy Thinking? It's how your past can hold your future hostage. Understanding Legacy Thinking Legacy Thinking occurs when you cling too much to how things used to be done. We're talking about those "best practices" or "industry norms" that stopped being effective years ago. This rigid mindset might sound familiar: “But I’ve always gotten work doing Direct Marketing!” “Nobody who is ethical uses Pay-To-Play sites.” “Why mess with what’s been successful?” Experience is vital. It's worth its weight in gold. But there’s a difference between leveraging that experience and being shackled by it. When you cling to outdated strategies, you are not leveraging your experience. Instead, you're building a cage around your potential. What landed you gigs yesterday might not even result in an audition today. The game changes constantly. How Legacy Thinking is Secretly Choking Your VO Career It Creates a Concrete Wall Against Change:  The voice-over industry is a chameleon. With AI, new platforms, changing client demands, and shifting budgets, if you’re anchored to "the way it's always been," you're resisting change. You are actively fighting gravity. You'll stagnate. Period. It Slams the Door on Innovation:  Remember Blockbuster? Kodak? Nokia? These companies failed not because they were bad but because they refused to challenge their own status quo. The voice actors who thrive today are the ones who experiment . They are trying new marketing strategies, performance styles, and genres. If you're not innovating, you're becoming a historical artifact. It Induces Decision Paralysis:  Have you ever agonized over investing in new equipment? Or debated trying a new coaching program? If your old setup “worked fine,” it might be holding you back. That's Legacy Thinking, forcing old solutions onto new problems. While you’re hesitating, opportunities are flying by. It Makes Your Own Ambition Disengage:  High performers crave growth. They thrive in environments that embrace progress. If you’re constantly telling yourself, "This is how I've always done it," you’re telling your own inner performer to shut down. That leads to disengagement, frustration, and even looking for a different line of work. Don’t let that happen! Spotting the Symptoms: Are You Trapped? Be honest with yourself. Here are the tell-tale signs: You spend more time discussing past bookings than setting future goals. You dismiss new ideas automatically. Phrases like "pay-to-play sites are scams" or "social media is a waste of time" may arise because they challenge your framework. You avoid any risks that challenge your established expertise. When a new idea pops into your head, your first thought is, "that won't work," instead of "how could that work?" Busting Out: How to Ditch Legacy Thinking for Good Let’s talk solutions. These changes aren’t rocket science, but they require conscious effort. Shift from "What Worked" to "What’s Possible": Instead of asking, “How did I land that client back in 2014?” ask yourself, “If I were starting my voice over career today , with all the current tech and trends, what would I do differently?” Challenge your own assumptions. Cultivate Constructive Self-Dissent:  Engage in some internal debate! Ask: "Is this truly the best  way or just the easiest way?" "Am I holding onto this because it’s comfortable or genuinely effective?" Be your most productive critic. Study the Future, Not Just the Past:  Don’t limit yourself to industry news. Explore marketing, tech, and business trends. Follow entrepreneurs beyond voice over. Listen to podcasts that challenge conventional wisdom. Understanding the broader direction of the world will better prepare you to adapt. Test, Don’t Assume:  Have a wild idea for a new demo spot or marketing approach? Instead of dismissing it with "That'll never work," test it for 30 days. Start small. Experiment. Trust data over assumptions. Reward Your Own Adaptability:  Celebrate every effort to try something new, even if it's clunky or doesn’t pay off immediately. Recognize that adaptability is a crucial superpower in today's market. The Future Belongs to the Flexible I have witnessed many voice actors, myself included, transform their careers not by resisting change but by embracing it. It's not about abandoning everything you know; it's about ensuring your knowledge is current, relevant, and propelling you forward. Are you repeating old patterns instead of designing new ones? Are you resisting change because it makes you uncomfortable? Are you clinging to "what worked" instead of passionately exploring "what's next?" Cut those invisible brakes.   • Well, Lookie Here: Another Voice Over Award Nomination (And Why You Should Totally Humble-Brag About Yours)

    So, uh, funny story. It happened again. I just got another nomination for a OneVoice Award . Yeah, I know, try to contain your shock. 😉 Seriously though, I was genuinely thrilled to see my name on that list again for the upcoming OneVoice Awards 2025. Celebrating excellence in voice artistry, the One Voice Awards announces its USA 2025 nominees. A huge shoutout is due to Bahlr Media for making the spot look so good that my voice didn't totally ruin it, and to North Idaho College for, you know, hiring me in the first place. Clearly, they have excellent taste. #JustSaying My initial reaction, naturally, was to do what any self-respecting human in the 21st century does: hit social media. I did a quick social media blast: 🎤 "It happened again! 🌟 I've been nominated for another OneVoice Award! A big thank you to @BahlrMedia for producing a damn fine-looking spot and North Idaho College for casting me✨ #VoiceOver #VoiceActing #onevoiceawards #OneVoiceAwards2025 #gravyforthebrain #Proud #onevoiceconf And while that felt good in the moment (validation, woo!), it got me thinking. Beyond the warm fuzzies and the chance to use excessive hashtags, what does an award nomination really  do for a voice actor? Turns out, potentially quite a bit. And if you're not leveraging yours, you're leaving free marketing gravy on the table. Why Your Award Nominations Aren't Just Digital Dust Collectors Let's be honest. We work tirelessly, often in our pajamas, talking to ourselves in padded boxes. It's not always the most glamorous life. So when a reputable organization like OneVoice says, "Hey, you! You're doing a good job!", it's a big deal. But it's more than just a personal ego boost (though we'll take those where we can get 'em). It's a fancy badge of approval:  Think of a nomination as a golden sticker that says "Quality Assured" by industry pros. Clients who may not know you from Adam or Eve will see that recognition and think, "Okay, this person is legit. Someone else trusts them with their project, maybe I should too." It cuts through the noise. Suddenly, you're slightly less invisible:  Award buzz gets people talking. Your name pops up on lists, in social feeds, and maybe even in industry newsletters. It's like a little spotlight finding your padded box in the vast, dark warehouse of voiceover talent. You look more put-together than you feel:  Let's face it, we're creatives. Our "brand" might sometimes feel like it's held together with duct tape and dry shampoo. Awards lend an air of professionalism and success that can make you appear far more organized and accomplished than you might be on a Tuesday morning before coffee. Networking without the awkward small talk (mostly):  Award events and the online conversations surrounding them are prime opportunities to connect. You already have a built-in ice-breaker: "Hey, congrats on your nomination!" or "See you at the awards?" It's networking with a purpose, rather than just awkwardly hovering near the veggie tray. Okay, I'm Nominated. Now What? Getting the nomination is step one. Step two is actually using  it to your advantage. Don't be shy! (Within reason, nobody likes a constant  humble-brag). Go Beyond the initial "OMG!":  Your first social media post is great. Now, spread the news strategically. Hit LinkedIn with a more professional announcement. Share it on your Facebook page. Tweet about it again a few days later, maybe highlighting the project itself. Use those hashtags! #SeriouslyUseThem Make Your Online Home Shine:  Your website is your central hub. Consider creating a section for "Awards and Recognition." Slap that nomination on your homepage. Update your bio. If the award provides a graphic or badge, flaunt it (according to their rules, of course). Update ALL the Things:  You know all those places you have a little bio or profile? Casting sites, online directories, your email signature? Add your nomination there. It's like sprinkling little credibility boosters all over the internet. Tell the People Who Mattered:  Remember those lovely folks who hired you or collaborated on the nominated project? Send them a quick, personal email to say thank you and let them know their project got recognized. It makes them look good too, and happy clients are repeat clients. Have a Plan for the Big Night (or Day):  If you win, great! Have a quick announcement drafted. If you don't, that's okay! You were nominated out of presumably a gazillion entries. Focus on the honor of being recognized amongst your peers. We all work hard in this industry. Getting an award nomination is a fantastic acknowledgment of that effort and the quality of your work. Don't let that recognition just fade into the digital ether. Use it, leverage it, and let it help open doors to new and exciting opportunities.     The Golden Moment: A Client Who Understands Voice Actors Getting cast for a project is always an exciting moment. Recently, I was hired to voice some commercials for a company called Postscript.io . The project itself was enjoyable, but what happened after the audio was delivered truly impressed me. A huge thank you is due to one member of the production team, @cinemadness, who shared the final spots on social media. Here is where they went above and beyond: they credited the entire cast and crew in their post! Why Client Credit is VO Gold This may seem like a simple gesture, but for us voice actors, our work is often integral yet uncredited in public-facing content. It means a tremendous amount. Recognition isn’t just about ego; it’s about professional validation and building your career. Professional Validation & Respect Being credited signals that the client and production team value your specific contribution. They acknowledge that the voice performance wasn’t just a commodity; it was a skilled craft essential to the final product's success. This shows a deep respect for the art of voice acting. Portfolio Building & Social Proof For voice actors at any stage, showcasing your work is vital. Credited posts from clients make it infinitely easier to: Share the Work: You can confidently share the client's post on your social media, linking directly to the final product. Update Your Portfolio/Demo Reels: Having a public credit attached to a finished piece offers concrete proof of your involvement and the context of your performance. Demonstrate Credibility: Potential future clients, seeing your name associated with professional projects, builds trust and showcases your experience. Networking & Industry Visibility When production teams and clients credit performers, it increases visibility not just for the project, but for you . Other creatives, casting directors, or potential clients who see the post might discover your work through that credit. This fosters a more connected and collaborative industry.   • The Long and Winding Road to Voice Over Success (and How Not to Get Lost)

    If you're reading this, chances are you've either dipped your toes into the magnificent, maddening, and potentially lucrative world of voice over, or you're about to take the plunge. Over my three decades in this bizarre business, I've seen a lot of things come and go, but one thing remains constant: success isn't typically a straight line, and it certainly doesn't happen overnight. So pull up a chair, grab a metaphorical coffee (I prefer tea, but you do you), and talk about some of the patterns I've noticed among those who actually make a go of it in this industry... Your Foundation: Why "Acting" Comes Before "Voice" First things first, and this might sound a little counterintuitive: if you're just starting out, or even if you're a few years in and feeling stuck, look beyond the mic for your foundation. I'm talking about good old-fashioned storytelling training. Think theater, on-camera acting, singing, improv, stand-up comedy – anything that teaches you how to connect with an audience, how to build a character, how to tell a story . Voice over training is absolutely crucial, but it's like putting a beautiful roof on a house with no walls. Get those walls built first, and your VO training will layer on top of a rock-solid foundation, making you a far more effective and, frankly, hirable voice actor. The Smart Money Move: Niche Down to Level Up About making money. We all want to, right? Here’s where a little pragmatism goes a long way. Good voice over coaches (bless their hearts) are good at spotting where your natural talents lie. Listen to them when they tell you which genre you have the best chance of making money in right now. I know, I know, you probably dream of being the next big anime voice, or narrating some epic documentary. But if your coach says you've got a killer commercial sound, embrace it! Get good at that, book those jobs, and then use the profit to fund the training and, yes, those expensive demos for the genre of your dreams. Think of it as a strategic detour to get where you really want to go. Cracking the Code: Maximizing Your Pay-to-Play Potential Let's talk about the dreaded P2P sites – those "Pay-to-Play" platforms. I've heard the complaints and some are valid. But here's the deal: legit P2P sites can be a goldmine if you use them effectively. This isn't about just setting up a profile and hoping for the best. This is about optimizing  that profile like it's your resume for the world that feeds the algorithm in question, and then auditioning consistently and well . And by "well," I mean not just performing, but understanding what these sites are looking for. If you're sending out auditions into the void and hearing crickets, don't quit. Find an objective, professional ear – someone who knows the VO world – to listen to your auditions. And for Zod's sake, get someone who knows the specific P2P site you're on to review your profile. There are tricks to this, and you want to be in on them. The Long Game: Patience and Persistence Pay Off Virtually no one, and I mean almost no one, starts booking meaningful voice over work right away.   This isn't a sprint; it's an ultra-marathon. You need to develop your auditioning chops, learn how to edit your own audio, hone your communication skills, and learn how to negotiate your rates. It takes time! Years, even. Most voice actors don't actually turn a profit for upwards of five years. Five years . So, breathe. Be patient. Keep learning. The Relationship Economy: It's All About Connections (sort of) Most new voice actors have absolutely zero understanding of marketing in general, let alone the specific nuances of voice over marketing. Here’s the secret sauce: it’s all about slowly, organically developing relationships. I don't just mean with agents and voice seekers. I mean everybody . The audio engineer running your session? Your best friend in the VO world! The casting director? Cultivate that relationship. Other voice actors? Network with them! This is a community, and the more genuine relationships you build, the more opportunities will come your way. It's not about being a slick salesperson; it's about being a good human who delivers excellent work. Think of it this way: the voice actors who are auditioning 10-15 times a day are the ones positioning themselves for success. How do they get those auditions? Through effective relationships with reps, casting sites, and direct clients. It’s a numbers game, absolutely, but it’s also undeniably a relationship game. The more people who know you, like you, and trust you, the more likely you are to get that email with an audition request. Your Booth, Your Business: Studio Quality Isn't Optional You can be the next Mel Blanc, the most talented vocal gymnast on the planet, but if your home studio sounds like you're recording in your pink-tiled bathroom, you will not book anything. Period. Voice seekers are listening to your audio quality just as much as your performance. Invest in a good microphone, treat your space, and learn the basics of audio engineering. This isn't optional; it's fundamental. Get Out of Your Own Way: The Power of Being You Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the voice actors who truly succeed are the ones who learn to get the hell out of their own way. I see it all the time: the ones who are too in their head, too desperate for a job, too cocky, too in love with the sound of their own voice, too obsessed with sounding younger or older, or constantly trying to mimic their voice over idol or favorite cartoon character have no shot. Stop it! BE YOU. Your unique voice, your unique perspective, your authentic self – that's your superpower. Trying to be someone else is a losing battle. Embrace who you are, refine your craft, and let your natural talent shine through. This journey is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be good days and frustrating days. But if you lay a strong foundation, are strategic about your income, leverage the right tools, understand that success takes time, build genuine relationships, optimize your tech, and most importantly, stay true to yourself, you'll be well on your way to a thriving career in this amazing industry.   • Understanding Voice Over Rates - Buyouts

    What is a buyout? Buyouts are common in non-union voice-over work, yet many voice actors are confused and fear them. What does it mean, and how does it affect voice over job rates? Buyouts and Rebuys A buyout is when a voiceover client pays you a usage fee for a certain period of time. Sometimes that period of time is forever, or in perpetuity . A full buyout is in perpetuity. A rebuy is an agreement to use a spot for an additional period of time. With this option, they have to pay you again. Learn more about usage fees here. "Buyouts terrify voice actors. They're worried that their career will be ruined if they accept a buyout, which is not always true!" - Tom Broadcast vs. Non-Broadcast Buyouts Non-broadcast content is often long-form, internal, or unfit for commercial use. When booking these jobs, I assume the content will live on the company's website, be posted on social media profiles, or be used internally. I fold usage into my quoted rate and don't sweat a non-broadcast full buyout in perpetuity because it will most likely not conflict with other jobs I take . Broadcast buyouts can be trickier. Voice seekers offering a full buyout for a broadcast project can create conflicts with future work in similar markets. If you lend your voice to a client in perpetuity, that could do long-term damage to your voiceover career. Quick Takeaways When you book a voice over gig, put the length of the usage in your calendar to ensure you don't encounter conflicts At the end of a buyout period, reach out to the client for a potential rebuy or extension of the buyout period. It's an easy way to reconnect with a client & gain extra passive income! Understand the usage before agreeing to buyouts. They are not always bad!   • That Gig Might Be a Trap: Protecting Your Voice from AI Harvesting Scams

    We know our voice is our unique instrument, our craft, and our business. We spend years honing it, investing in equipment, and building relationships. But there's a growing threat lurking in seemingly legitimate job offers: scams designed not for real projects, but to steal your voice for AI cloning. It sounds like science fiction, but it's happening right now. Artificial Intelligence technology can create synthetic voices – sometimes startlingly realistic ones – from audio data. While this tech has legitimate uses, bad actors are exploiting it. They're tricking voice actors into recording lengthy scripts under false pretenses, harvesting that audio to train AI models that replicate their voices without consent, control, or compensation. Imagine finding your voice used in ads, audiobooks, or worse – scams and deepfakes – without your permission and without earning a cent. It's a violation of your identity and your livelihood. Understanding the Danger of Voice Theft in AI How AI Harvesting Scams Work: A Real-World Example These scams aren't always obvious. Recently, I encountered a script presented as a potential voiceover job from a company called Giglumin. Here's what I and fellow voice actors Brigid Reale and Lynn Norris of VO for VA discovered. Giglumin is a recently established online platform designed to connect freelancers with clients, facilitating various gig-based services. The website emphasizes features such as 24/7 assistance, budget-friendly options, satisfaction-guaranteed payments, and swift delivery of high-quality work. However, it's important to exercise caution when engaging with Giglumin. The platform has been assigned a low trust score by ScamAdviser, indicating potential risks. Factors contributing to this assessment include the website's recent creation (registered on March 31, 2025), the use of services to conceal the owner's identity, and its association with a registrar known for hosting a high percentage of spam and fraudulent sites. The topic? Child malnutrition – a totally plausible subject for an NGO documentary or educational content. The script was well-written, structured, and detailed. FYI if you received a similar email, post your experience in the comments below! Key Features of Voice Harvesting Scripts Here's why it was also perfect for voice harvesting: It Was LONG: Introduction, seven detailed sections, conclusion – pages and pages of text. Recording it would easily yield 30-60+ minutes of clean audio. That's a goldmine for AI training data. It Used Natural, Flowing Language: It wasn't just a list of words. It had complex sentences, varied vocabulary, transitions, and structure. This allows the AI to learn not just your sound but also your pacing, intonation, and prosody – the unique rhythm of how you speak. It Covered Diverse Sounds: The text included technical terms, statistics, geographical locations, and general informational language, ensuring a wide range of phonetic sounds were captured. The scammer's goal is simple: get you into your booth reading their text for as long as possible, capturing the raw data they need to create a digital replica of you . Red Flags: How to Spot a Potential Voice Harvesting Scam Protecting yourself starts with vigilance. Be wary if you encounter: Vague Client Information: The "client" lacks a professional website, social media presence, or verifiable history. Communication may be limited to generic email addresses or messaging apps. Unusually High Pay for Simple Work: If the offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Excessively Long "Audition" or "Test" Scripts: Asking for more than a few paragraphs for an initial audition is suspicious. Never provide extensive custom reads for free. Focus on Quantity Over Quality (of Direction): They want a clean, raw recording of a long script but provide little direction regarding performance, tone, or usage. The only goal is to get the audio recorded. Pressure and Urgency: They push you to accept and record quickly, often bypassing standard procedures like contracts or detailed usage agreements. Refusal to Sign Contracts or Detail Usage: A legitimate client will have a contract that details how and where your voice will be used and for how long. Scammers avoid this.
