GKN Weekly Update 6/13/11

Happy Flag Day! Technically it’s tomorrow, but I wanted to remind you so you can buy that special flag in your life a thoughtful gift. That is how this holiday works, right…?

So I finished the editing for the audio book I narrated and sent it off to the client. I’ll get the list of retakes in a few days and bang those out, edit them in, and send the final version for one last review. Honestly, the editing was quicker and easier than I thought it would be! The engineer did what is called “punch editing”. That means when I make a boo-boo the engineer rewinds to the sentence before the one I just screwed up. Then I hear the replay in my headphones of that sentence and when I hear that sentence end, I pick up where I left off and keep narrating. It saves a ton of time. Basically, all I did was cut out the page turns, the huge gulps of air (yes, Jeff, I kept the breaths!), and the occasional burp. Yes, I burp a lot when I record, you got a problem with that? It turns out I’m not the only one! My engineer says it’s very common so now I don’t feel like a total pig.

TIP OF THE WEEK: I never thought I’d find myself doing long-form editing, much less enjoying it! I think that’s one of those things that most aspiring talents don’t envision themselves doing and kind of look down at the prospect of it. “I’m an artist! Doing anything technical detracts from my craft.” Yeah, I got your craft right here.

Let me tell you something, kids. The picture in your head of what you think things will be like never matches up with reality. I’m not saying life sucks and your dreams are stupid. Hell, I love my life and I’m doing the things I dreamed about! I’m saying you have to adjust to life and the things that come at you. Don’t compromise, don’t sell out, and don’t give up, but be realistic!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: It’s not the questions that get you in trouble; it’s the answers. Tom Brokaw
