Voice Actor Social Media Mistakes
I have been promoting myself on social media for almost 20 years as a working voice actor. I have made my share of blunders! You try to learn from them as you go. You hope not too many people notice. Then you move on.
But there is one issue sitting at the very top of the list of voice actor social media mistakes. It drives me absolutely crazy because it is so easily avoidable: posting their audition videos on social media. And it is a TERRIBLE idea.
Every Audition Belongs Behind Closed Doors
Posting any audition on social media exposes you to potential legal & financial trouble.
Treat every project as if you signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). It doesn't matter whether the audition is for a broadcast commercial or a non-broadcast project. The rule applies across the board.
If you audition for a TV or radio commercial, that product, service, or brand campaign likely has not been revealed to the public yet. When you post that audition video online, you are leaking trade secrets. You are potentially screwing up a marketing campaign that a company spent millions of dollars to produce. And you are exposing yourself to serious legal consequences.
If it's a non-broadcast project like an internal corporate e-learning module or a medical training video, that content is intended for internal employees, doctors, or staff. It might contain proprietary software details, internal security protocols, or confidential business strategies.
So assume that every single audition you touch is under a strict NDA. Union or non-union. High pay or no pay. Treat the material as confidential. That keeps you safe both legally, financially, and reputationally (is that a word?).
The Voice Actor Social Media Mistakes of Confusing Auditions with Marketing
Submitting auditions through the 3 Portals of Voice Over Casting Opportunities is part of your workflow as a voice actor, not a front-facing marketing campaign.
When you record an audition, you are doing a private job interview for a specific Voice Seeker. Video recording yourself doing that audition and blasting it on social media is not marketing, it signals to clients that you don't understand boundaries.
Farming vs. Hunting: What Voice Seekers Are Actually Looking For
Auditioning is a Hunting Tool. You are targeting a clients and a gig and you're going directly for it.
Social media is a Farming tool. You are planting seeds of credibility over a long period of time.
Besides, producers and creative directors are busy people. They're too focused on creating their own content and managing their own clients. They are not scrolling Instagram looking for voice actors.
When a Voice Seeker actually does check out your social media profiles, they're doing a risk management assessment. They want to confirm three things:
You are not an NDA violator leaking projects.
You are not a client basher complaining about low pay or bad direction.
You are not posting unhinged content that could embarrass their brand.
If you pass that sniff test, you stay in the running. If you fail, you're done.
The VO Strategist Social Media Protocol: How to Build Genuine Relatability
Effective social media content for voice actors focuses on personal human connection rather than posting auditions, goofy impressions, or "keeping it real", whatever the hell THAT means.
Stop posting videos of the silly voices you can make. Nobody in the professional casting world is hiring based on that.
Stop posting about the unpaid cartoon fan project you booked on a Discord server. It does not build authority with paying clients.
If you want to post content that actually supports your business, focus on simple human connection:
Share your actual life: Post about your dog, your weekend cooking projects, your favorite soccer team, or your hobbies.
Demonstrate likeability: Show that you are a normal, functional, pleasant human being.
Focus on trust: Show potential clients that you are easy to communicate with and reliable to work with.
People want to work with people they like and trust. Creating content that highlights your humanity builds that trust naturally.
Scaling Your Business Beyond Social Media Rules
Fixing your social media habit is only one small component of building a profitable voice over business across all 5 Categories.
Knowing what not to post on social media keeps you out of legal trouble. But knowing what to avoid does not automatically build your direct client pipeline. It does not show you how to cold-email corporate producers. It does not fix your Cash Flow bottlenecks. And it will not build a sustainable Self-Marketing infrastructure tailored to your specific voice and market fit.
Diagnosing these gaps is step one. Fixing them requires looking directly under the hood of your business operations.
