- Creatives Suck At Money: Why?
Subscribe on YouTube for the latest... Why do creatives suck at money? I know not all creatives suck at money, but in the 25 years I've been doing voiceover, and even before that when I was pursuing theater and on camera work, I was noticing that that there seems to be a correlation between how creative you are and how crappy you are at managing your finances. Why? Some of it I think is conscious, some of it I think is unconscious. Conscious as in, some people identify themselves, have a strong sense of identity when it comes to their relationship with money. What's weird is in the arts, if you like money, you're not cool, you're some kind of fascist, I don't know. It's kind of weird. I also think some of it is cultural, as in how you were raised at home and what the culture of your school life, maybe your place of worship, the friends that you hang out with, even the movies or TV shows that you watch, have an effect on your relationship with money. Here's a little secret. You can be an artist and still be good with money, too. You can have your artist little beret cocked to the side over here, and then you can have your, I don't know what the other one would be, a fedora, I don't know, some other kind of hat that reflects that you're good with money. You can have both of those hats on, you should have both of those hats on if you wanna have any chance of being successful in the arts these days, you need to have both of those hats on. So it's not a sin to like money, it's not a sin to be good with your finances. But here's the other thing... Don't relieve yourself of the responsibility of being good with money because you are an artist. You know, oh no, no, no, no, I don't work with accounting software, it messes with my, you know, Anahatra chakra or, you know, whatever. Takeaways About Money You can have a healthy relationship with money, both internally and externally There's no reason why you have to have the word 'starving' in front of the word 'artist' How you work with money and how you make your money work for you as one who is self -employed is different from someone who works for someone or something else Keep Going - Watch this Trailer: Master Your Cash Flow Click the button below to rent "Master Your Cash Flow" for only FIVE BUCKS! - Marketing Campaigns: Do They Still Matter?
Subscribe on YouTube for the latest... Introduction Do marketing campaigns still matter? Did they ever matter? Do they really make a difference? The short answer is yes, sort of. Some of the time, it depends. That was a very lawyerly answer, but I get these VO Strategist 15-minute consults with lots of aspiring voice actors, or voice actors who are a little farther along in their journey, and most of the time what they want to talk to me about is marketing. "I don't wanna be on pay to play sites, I just wanna do self -marketing. Everyone says direct marketing is the way to go." This and that and the other thing. So yes, direct marketing campaigns can be effective. Being on pay to play sites can also be effective. Being represented by agents and managers can also be effective. Most of the time when people talk about marketing campaigns, they're talking about direct marketing campaigns, and most of the time when they're talking about that, they're talking about emails. What Else Are They Talking About? They're also talking about social media and blogging. I consider social media and blogging indirect marketing where you're just kinda over here doing your thing and then hoping that voice seekers notice through SEO or word of mouth or referrals or other things, notice your stuff and then keep you top of mind for future consideration. So yeah, marketing campaigns matter, but most people just kinda go flying into it sideways because they watched a video or went to a conference or listened to a workshop or got a coaching session from one of the great direct marketing coaches in our industry and they do this, they do that, and then nothing happens. Or they notice that they have a 1% response rate, 2, 3, 4% response rate. Well, I gotta be honest, I mean, having a two or three percent response rate with a direct marketing campaign in 2024, that's pretty good. Why is that pretty good? Well, it used to be a lot higher. It used to be a lot higher because, well, there were just a lot less voice actors trying to do this. And the other thing that's happened is a lot more voice seekers are just sick and tired of our stupid emails They are deleting any voice actor that sends them a marketing email or they're just setting up their their spam filters. So these things go straight to the trash or straight into a folder of some kind. Because here's a misconception a lot of voice actors think that a voice seeker wakes up in the morning and goes... "Oh gee man, I just hope I can find some voice actor that I can just give all this money to! I'm gonna spend the whole day looking for amazing voice actors so I can give them sacks of money so they can talk out loud, which I know is their dream!" Okay, no, no, no. Think about it. What percentage of any project that a voice seeker does actually involves the voice actor? When it comes to casting, writing, producing, directing, whatever, five percent, 10% maybe? So if that's true, that means they're spending the other 90 to 95% of time not thinking about us, not giving a crap about us. They're too busy courting clients. They're too busy writing scripts, creating storyboards, having meetings, talking to the legal department, doing all these other things. They're not just sitting there waiting for your stupid email to show up in their inbox, okay? Now, that doesn't mean you shouldn't use direct marketing strategies, and that doesn't mean you shouldn't email potential clients, but don't think that you're just gonna send a couple of emails and then all of a sudden the phone's gonna ring. My record for sending a cold email to a client and getting booked is 10 years, and that was 10 years ago. Now, that's an extreme example, but my point is that, yes, you should make marketing campaigns. However, it should be part of a balanced breakfast. It should not be the entire meal. Now, there are some people out there, usually the loudest ones on the social media groups, that are saying pay to plays are horrible, direct marketing is the only way to go. That is patently false, and any coach that's telling you that is not truly invested in your future as a voice actor. Pay to play sites like marketing campaigns can be, and I think should be, part of a balanced breakfast. The question is, how much time and energy should you spend on which thing? And everyone is telling you to do something different. And often the information is contradictory. I guarantee that there are some coaches or people out there who, if they watch this video, would be furious at me, because they are steeped in their own value system, and I'm steeped in my value system, and that's fine. That's totally fine. Takeaway My point is this; collect objective data about the industry, about the clients that you want to contact, in the genres that you wish to be successful so you can make good decisions about how to move your voiceover business forward. - Thinking Like a Business: Can Actors Actually Do That?
Subscribe on YouTube for the latest... Can actors think like a business? Will that get in the way of their craft? Will not doing it doom them to failure? Is there a sweet spot? What's the Problem? The problem is both educational and cultural. We have been educated using the 19th century Prussian educational model which is designed to create soldiers and factory workers. Not very conducive for artistic, self-employed, self-determining, entrepreneurs. The other problem is cultural. We have been raised in a American Idol, Chorus Line, God I hope I get it, audition-and-pray, if you're not a star you're a loser, environment. Also not very helpful. People think they have to get discovered, that they have to get their big break, that they have to get lucky to be effective and successful and that's just not true. If you're going to depend on that to be successful you may have to wait for a long time. How Actors Can Think Like a Business Examine your assumptions to manage your expectations What are your assumptions about yourself? What are your assumptions about the entertainment industry? What are your assumptions about what your relationship is or could be with the entertainment industry? Your assumptions influence your expectations and it's extremely important for you to manage your expectations. You need to understand how you work and how you don't work, how you operate how you don't operate, and this will influence your decision making process. Make business decisions based on facts, not your feelings You need to have facts. You need to have data. You need to be able to analyze and understand what's going on in the industry and what's going on inside yourself. The ability to metacognate, which is where you stand outside of yourself and look at yourself from the outside objectively so you can make objective data-driven fact-based decisions about your acting career. Be realistic about your talent, your resources, and your life situation Be realistic about your talent (or lack of talent) Be realistic about the resources that you have (or don't have) Be realistic about what the logistics of your life are Be realistic about the skill sets that you have (or don't have) Figure out what exactly you need to be effective Keep Going - Watch this Trailer: Get Your Acting Act Together Click the button below to rent "Get Your Acting Act Together" for only FIVE BUCKS! - Am I An Artist?
Subscribe on YouTube for the latest... Recently my wife and I watched a PBS documentary about the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. It was a fascinating and tragic exploration of this extraordinarily gifted young man who died too soon. We watched his meteoric rise into the art community, his relationship with Andy Warhol, how he was traveling the world and making ridiculous amounts of money selling these amazing works of art and then he died tragically. He became part of the '27 Club' for those of you who are familiar with that. As we were watching it, it got me thinking. Am I an artist? Am I a part of the community, or am I some kind of hack? What is art? Art is when you create something that makes people feel something. Do my eLearning modules or medical narration work make people feel? I don't know. I try very hard to create a safe environment through my voice by being engaging and sincere and kind. Whenever I narrate one of those videos about helping people pick their insurance benefits, I think about that single mom who's got kids. One of them may have special needs and that single mom is terrified of picking the wrong prescription plan. I do everything I can to make that single mom feel safe and confident that they're going to make the right choices. So yeah, I'm using my voice to make someone feel better. I don't know if this is some kind of narcissistic, self-indulgent exercise that I'm doing right now, but watching that documentary about Basquiat moved me. It reminded me why I decided to want to do voiceover in the first place. My point is that no matter what kind of voiceover work you do, you are engaging. You are emoting. You are feeling. You are trying to connect with people. And if that isn't art, I don't know what it is.
